ICS ThermaPore™ Patented Ceramic Fiber Media Has Unique Capabilities

The silicon carbide fiber was developed and patented by ICS to provide the unique microwave-heating capability of the ThermaPore™ filter media.

• This fiber is capable of process operations up to 1,200°C.
• The silicon carbide fiber will heat to 1,000°C (“white-hot”) in less than 10 seconds in a standard 2.45 GHz microwave field (kitchen microwave frequency).
• All ThermaPore™ fiber diameters exceed the US OSHA standards for hazardous ceramic (respirable) fibers, requiring no special handling or operator respirators.
• A volume silicon carbide fiber manufacturing process exists to produce ton quantities. (The fiber is only available for use in the ThermaPore™ filter media to ICS and it licensees.)

The ThermaPore™ filter media is a designed combination of the patented ICS silicon carbide fibers and various commercially available aluminum oxide fibers.

• The filter media can be engineered for specific microwave heating performance.
• Adjusting the silicon carbide fiber content increases or decreases the microwave-heating time required to achieve a specified time-temperature curve.
• High-temperature filter applications not requiring microwave heating are available.

ThermaPore™ is manufactured on commercial papermaking machines capable of producing a 100,000 square feet of filter media per day.

• A patented a ceramic binder system gives the ThermaPore™ filter media its high strength and durability.
• The pleated filter media is capable of 1,200°C operating temperatures.
• The filter media has 1/5th the backpressure of commercial high-temperature ceramic filters.
• With a surface area of 65 meters²/gram, it is compatible with catalyst coatings without an extra “washcoat” step.
